Dr. Steven Bloembergen has 30 years of leadership experience in the development and commercialization of biomaterials.  He previously co-founded EcoSynthetix in 1996, which held its IPO in 2011 (TSX: ECO), and was Canada’s largest IPO in the Cleantech sector.  In 2012, Steven received the Ernst and Young “2012 Entrepreneur of the Year Award”.  He helped prove out the base technology with pilot lines and production sites in the US and Europe and a manufacturing capacity for the starch nanoparticles in excess of 200 million lbs/yr.  He also built a broad global IP portfolio and established a broad network of university collaborators.  These collaborations using ECO’s biopolymer nanoparticles for dental and medical applications resulted in the foundational technology for GreenMark.  He is the inventor of over 25 patent families related to biomaterials.  He received his Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Waterloo.

Dr. Wendy Bloembergen is an Internist and Nephrologist who is pursuing her entrepreneurial interests after spending a number of years raising her family.  Prior to this Wendy consulted for a venture capital firm as a medical analyst.  Before this taste of the business world, she maintained an academic position at the University of Michigan, Department of Internal Medicine (Nephrology), where she treated patients and served as a Principal and Co-Investigator on multiple NIH grants focused on epidemiologic studies of patients with chronic renal disease.  She is the author of more than 20 peer reviewed articles and several book chapters.  Wendy received her MD from the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, and her Internal Medicine and Nephrology fellowships at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario and University of Western Ontario.  She subsequently completed a Research Fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical School and an MS in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Nathan is a senior Ph.D. student in the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan (UM), working in the lab of Dr. Joerg Lahann.  Nathan has been collaborating with Dr. Bloembergen since 2009, first at EcoSynthetix, then at the University of Waterloo, and currently at UM.  Nathan is coinventor of the GreenMark dental technology, has been actively involved in startup activities and will join GreenMark full time in September 2017.

Dr. Joerg Lahann is a Professor of Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan (UM).  He also serves as the Director of the UM Biointerfaces Institute and as the co-Director of the Institute for Functional Interfaces at the Karlrsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany.  Joerg is a co-inventor of GreenMark’s dental technology.  He is a co-author of more than 190 papers and has contributed to more than 30 patents and patent applications.  He has been selected by Technology Review as one of the top 100 young scientists and is the recipient of the 2007 Nanoscale Science and Engineering Award, an NSF-CAREER award, and both a single-PI and a team Idea award (2006 & 2011) from the US Department of Defense.  He serves on the board of Seventh Sense, a health technology company.  Joerg received a Ph.D. from the RWTH Aachen in Germany and completed postdoctoral training in the research group of Prof. Robert S. Langer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He joined the University of Michigan in 2003.

Dr. Kenneth J. Pienta is the Donald S. Coffey Professor of Urology and Director of Research at the Brady Urological Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  He is also a Professor in the Departments of Oncology and Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences and serves as a faculty member in the Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Pathobiology Programs at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  He is also a Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.  Ken is a two-time American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professor Award recipient.  Ken has a proven, peer-reviewed track record in organizing and administering a translational research program that successfully incorporates bench research, agent development, and clinical application.  He has international expertise in the development of novel therapeutic programs for prostate cancer.  He is the author of more than 400 peer-reviewed articles, and been the principal investigator on numerous local and national clinical trials.  Ken is the holder of multiple patents, is co-founder of OncoFusion where he serves on the Scientific Advisory Board and he has served as a Scientifc Advisory Board member or consultant to biotechnology companies including Curis, Amgen, J&J, Millenium, Gtx, Myriad Genetic Labs and Compendia.

Scott Pundsack is a lawyer and patent agent.  Scott began his legal career over 20 years ago and is currently a partner in Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in Toronto, Canada.  Scott is licensed to practice before the US and Canadian patent offices.  His subject area specialties include green chemistry, healthcare, and bio-based materials.  Scott’s work also includes managing litigation and other disputes, and patent licensing.  He has been recognized as an IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property and is a is a contributing author to Life Sciences and Chemical Patent Practice in Canada: A Practical Guide.  Scott is active in various Angel groups in Ontario.  He received a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1992.  He received his J.D. from the University of Toronto in 1995.  He was called to the bar in Ontario, Canada in 1997 and is a registered professional engineer..

Frank van Luttikhuizen is a Chartered Professional Accountant.  Frank was CFO of EcoSynthetix Inc. from its inception in 1996 until he retired in 2009.  Prior to that he was a CFO for a venture company which made numerous investments in software ventures and a biotechnology venture in 1996.  He possesses strong intuitive and analytical skills and has experience in leading negotiations with customers, regulators, and stakeholder groups.  He was a board member for various private and public companies.  He has successfully managed organizations through significant strategic change through the development of key operating plans and by providing “hands-on” management, direction, coaching, and mentoring as required.  He has a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Western Ontario and an Honors Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Windsor.

Dr. Juewen Liu is Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Waterloo, and a member of the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology.  Juewen is a leading expert in functional DNA research such as aptamers and DNAzymes.  His lab performs in vitro selection to isolate DNA sequences that can selectively bind to various metal ions, small molecules, proteins and materials surfaces.  He has also developed a number of bio/nano hybrid materials for diagnostic and biomedical applications.  His lab has been working with EcoSynthetix since 2011 with the support of NSERC Engage and CRD grants to develop starch nanoparticle based drug delivery systems.  He has authored over 160 research papers, receiving nearly ten thousand citations.  He has received a Fred Beamish Award (2014) from the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) and an Early Researcher Award (2011) from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation.  Juewen received his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry in 2005 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  He cofounded the company Andalyze Inc. to commercialize DNA-based metal sensors and worked there during its start-up phase (2005-2007).  Juewen was a postdoctoral fellow at the Sandia National Labs and the University of New Mexico (2007-2009) before joining the University of Waterloo in 2009.

Dr. Todd Hoare is an Associate Professor, University Scholar, and Canada Research Chair in Engineered Smart Materials (Tier 2) in the Department of Chemical Engineering at McMaster University, Ontario joining McMaster in 2008 after a post-doctoral fellowship with Robert Langer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Todd specializes in engineering hydrogels on all length scales with targeted “smart” properties, with a focus on correlating material properties with biological responses to develop new drug delivery vehicles with “on demand” or environment-specific activity.  Todd’s work has been profiled by Popular Science, Wired, and BBC for its potential in solving clinical challenges through innovative biomaterials design.  He has published over 65 papers, has three granted patents (including two of which have led to a recent start-up) and six pending patent applications, and won an Innovation Challenge award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada recognizing the novelty and commercializability of his research.  Todd received the 2016 Early Investigator Award from the Canadian Biomaterials Society and the 2010 John Charles Polanyi Prize in Chemistry from the Government of Ontario.  He is an Associate Editor of Chemical Engineering Journal for materials engineering, a member of the editorial advisory board for Colloid and Polymer Science, and President-Elect of the Canadian Biomaterials Society.

Gary Kendra of the Kendra Law Firm, is a TechTown (Detroit, MI) based attorney who practices in the areas of corporate law and technology licensing and commercialization.  Before re-entering private law practice in 2002, he served as Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary of Genomic Solutions Inc., a manufacturer of biotechnology research instruments that he helped take public on the NASDAQ exchange.  Prior to that, he spent 15 years in medium sized and large Detroit-based law firms specializing in technology law, corporate and real estate law, university technology transfer, intellectual property transactions, and mergers and acquisitions.  Gary has written and lectured extensively on the law and technology, including co-authoring two books for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education.  He is a graduate of Michigan State University where he received a dual major in Economics and James Madison College (public policy).  He received his law degree from Wayne State University Law School, where he served on the Law Review, and a Masters of Laws (LLM) in Taxation also from Wayne State University Law School.
